This article contextualises the historical continuum of interventions in Haiti. First, I describe the phase of transition from a multinational intervention into an institutional/international intervention. The process of transition establishes the historical continuality between different interventions. The interventions at the hands of multinational groupings and the subsequent take-over and furtherance of interventions by international organisations present an enjoined structure. Second, the institutional engagement with the question of responsibility reinforces this historical continuality. The practice of ex gratia responsibility by international organisations links interventionist practices with a history of colonial benevolence.
